A Driveshaft Guard is installed between the dyno and engine and is designed to absorb the energy from the driveshaft in the event of a failure. The Driveshaft Guard acts as a shield surrounding the driveshaft and prevents excessive damage. If your Driveshaft Guard is equipped with interceptor tubes, this provides an additional level of safety by helping to absorb the energy, reduce the motion of the failed driveshaft and safely bring the rotating equipment to a stop.
All test cells should have an emergency shutdown procedure in place. Emergency stop kits are designed to power down the system in the event of an emergency. Traditionally, emergency stop kits shut off electrical power from all devices associated with the running of the engine. Install these kits in the proper locations so that the stop button is easily accessible and can be pushed immediately in case of an emergency. Safety alarms should also be installed.
Your test cell should have a separate fire suppression and alarm system. Since a potential test cell fire will be oil, diesel fuel or natural gas in origin, a water sprinkling system will not be effective. Instead, a fire suppression system for petroleum product-fed fires is recommended. Ensure your system meets the requirements of your local fire protection regulations.
